Thanks for visiting our team page!
Who are we?
We are a group of students (Dom, Priya, Brett and Matt) in the Online MBA Program at Simon Fraser University. Our Project Management course group is tasked with creating a fundraiser in a limited amount of time (our deadline is February 14th). We chose the GVFB Virtual Food Drive because it is a great way to raise awareness and promote an important charity. The virtual aspect works well for us as a group because we all live in different areas of BC and can collaborate together online to detail this fundraiser from inception through execution to completion.
Why donate?
Food insecurity is a prevalent issue in every community. Those in need visit the GVFB for a variety of reasons. In 2024, the breakdown included relocation internationally (35%), low wages or pension (24%), cost of living expenses (18%), loss of income (18%), and other (5%). In 2024 alone, the GVFB registered over 7,000 new clients in need.
Sometimes, circumstances out of our control can lead to food insecurity. A single mother affected by food insecurity explained: "I found myself at a point in my life where absolutely everything that could go wrong went wrong. I could not feed myself. I could not even provide food to feed my daughter. I very quickly went from the position of someone who could be a donor to someone who desperately needed these services."
Impact:
The GFVB serves four Metro Vancouver communities: Vancouver, New Westminister, Burnaby and the North Shore. The GFVB partners with over 150 community agency partners that include non-profits like womens and childrens shelters, transition houses, and after-school programs -- all of which provide meals and snacks for thousands.
The GVFB also provides emergency support across the province: the GVFB team shipped 50,000lbs of food (fresh and non-perishable items) to the Lake Country Food Bank and other local food banks to help those displaced by wildfires.
Recent projects at the GVFB have helped those in need while reducing waste. The most recent pilot project partnered with local farmers to make use of the BC Farmers Food Donation Tax Credit. This credit allows the opportunity to reduce year-end taxes payable by donating surplus produce grown in BC to local food banks. In 2024, the GVFB received over 375,000lbs of donated produce from local farms which included nutritious fruits and veggies like carrots, apples, and zucchinis.
If you're curious how GVFB utilizes donated funds, here is there breakdown:
- 49% - Distribution, Donated Food & Other Products
- 21% - Operations & Programs
- 17% - Food Purchases
- 8% - Development & Fundraising
- 4% - Office & Administration
- 1% - CAP Grants (Canadian Agricultural Partnership)
Online donations are also tax-deductible. Please check your email inbox or spam folder for an automated tax receipt once your donation is successfully processed.
Thank you in advance for supporting our Virtual Food Drive and for ensuring that our communities have access to fresh and healthy food.
